Never Meet Your Heroes

The Boys began as a series of comics by writer Garth Ennis and artist Darick Robertson. First released in 2006, the comics were published under the WildStorm banner before Dynamite Entertainment purchased the rights. It concluded in 2012 following its 72nd issue.

The plot of the series revolves around the eponymous Boys — Billy Butcher, Wee Hughie, the Frenchman, Mother’s Milk, and the Female — a group of CIA operatives who monitor superhero activity. In this universe, superpowered “heroes” are known to be morally corrupt and dangerous, indulging the perks afforded by being a high-profile celebrity. A group known as the Seven — Homelander, Queen Maeve, Black Noir, A-Train, Starlight, the Deep, and Translucent — rank atop this list, backed by the powerful Vought American.

In 2019, Amazon Studios premiered the first episode of a The Boys TV adaptation. Adapting the source material, the show featured a star-studded cast: Karl Urban (William “Billy” Butcher), Jack Quaid (Hugh “Hughie” Campbell Jr.), Laz Alonso (Marvin T.
