The Genesis Of Retro Gaming

Founded by Martin Bromley and Richard Stewart, the SEGA Corporation joined the gaming industry in the 1960s. In the modern day, the company is located in Tokyo; however, it boasts branches in international locales such as England and the United States. Having created some of the greatest franchises of all time (including Sonic The Hedgehog and Yakuza), the company is a well-respected household name.

Originally, SEGA focused on arcade gaming, creating a coin-operated shooting game called Periscope. Their business approach changed when the arcade industry started to decline in the ‘80s, and they soon began developing a new type of home console: the SG-1000. Unfortunately, as a result of Nintendo’s market dominance, they had limited success until the debut of the SEGA Genesis, which became successful in overseas territories thanks to the popularity of Sonic The Hedgehog.

After further failed attempts at crafting a commercially viable console (the 32X, Saturn, and Dreamcast being three examples), SEGA retreated from this corner of the market and evolved into a third-party developer. They have since developed many installments in their mainstay franchises, which include Sonic The Hedgehog, Yakuza, and Total War — among others. Today, their library of games consists of more than 500 releases, an achievement that awarded them a spot in the Guinness Book Of World Records.
