A Not-So-Good Guy

Created by director and screenwriter Don Mancini, Child’s Play (1988) is an American horror movie that centers around Charles Lee “Chucky” Ray (played by Brad Dourif), an infamous serial killer who transfers his soul into a creepy-looking “Good Guy” doll to escape his fate after being shot multiple times by detective Mike Norris (Chris Sarandon). He plays the part of an inanimate toy, successfully evading the arm of the law. Shortly after this event, Karen Barclay (Catherine Hicks) purchases the toy as a gift for her son, Andy (Alex Vincent). As time goes by, Chucky commits a series of brutal murders, his actions being blamed on the young six-year-old. Karen, having seen the doll come to life for herself, explains the situation to detective Norris, but he (expectedly) doesn’t believe her … until he is also attacked. The remainder of the film sees Karen and Mike joining forces to prevent Chucky from taking over Andy’s body.

Because of the success of the original film, the franchise has spawned multiple sequels. In 2019, a reboot was released, directed by Lars Klevberg. Actor Mark Hamill took over for Dourif, lending his vocal talents to Chucky, who is reimagined as a defective animatronic. Like the original, the toy is gifted to Andy (Gabriel Bateman) by his mother (Aubrey Plaza), and it starts developing violent tendencies, a gradual decline that culminates with a full-blown killing spree.
